As of 2024, around 2.5 million children are being raised in kinship families in the United States.

In 2023, 131,490 children, or 38% of all children in foster care, were living in kinship care with a relative or kin caregiver.

Just over half of all children living in foster care with relatives or kin, 70,934 children, were being cared for by licensed caregivers in 2023. States and jurisdictions are now implementing kin-specific licensing standards so that children in kin foster homes can be supported like other children in foster care.
