Two-Generation Approaches to Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention: State and Local Examples

The well-being of children is intertwined with the well-being of their families and communities. When prevention programs provide services and supports to parents and caregivers in addition to providing services to children, the whole family benefits. Use these resources to learn about States, Tribes, and local jurisdictions providing two-generation (2Gen) services to enhance family well-being and prevent child maltreatment.

Building a Thriving Tennessee Through 2Gen
Tennessee Department of Human Services

Kickapoo Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention: Strong Fathers, Strong Families (PDF - 373 KB)
Kansas Health Foundation (2022)
Explains Strong Fathers, Strong Families, a 2Gen program that aims to strengthen the parenting skills of fathers and support extended families to reduce the risk of child maltreatment and improve overall family well-being.

Maryland Family Network
Describes services for Maryland families considered to be at higher risk for child maltreatment, including joint parent-child activities, self-sufficiency programs, parenting education, child care, health education services, and more.

Minnesota 2-Generation Policy Network
Describes a joint effort between State agencies, counties, local organizations, and the White Earth Nation in Minnesota to advance 2Gen approaches to improve outcomes for children and parents. White Earth Nation has incorporated traditional healing knowledge and cultural practices into its child protection system and offers an array of community-based services to meet families’ holistic needs.

Red Lake Nation (2021)
Explains Red Lake Nation’s redesigned child and family services program, which addresses intergenerational trauma and healing through family and community relationships. The program offers a traditional approach to fostering wellness and connectedness and works to create a deeper personal connection with all family members to improve whole-family well-being.

Sche’lang’en Village: Lummi Nation Housing Authority (PDF - 13,107 KB)
United for Youth (2021)
Describes a housing community created by the Lummi Tribe in the Pacific Northwest. The housing community is infused with social services and provides an opportunity for families to make positive life changes. The housing units serve parents who want to reunify with their children, those overcoming addictions, and others who need support.
