States develop their own realistic job previews (RJPs) to present the unique aspects of their child welfare agency, available positions, geography, and client populations. RJPs are designed to present a balanced view of both the rewards and demands of child welfare positions in order to align the goals and expectations of applicants with the requirements of child welfare work. The goal is to improve the fit between the applicant and the job, increasing job satisfaction and reducing the number of new staff who quit because their job roles and demands were not what they had envisioned.
RJP videos and related material offer guidance and tips for new caseworkers and can be used at a number of different points in the hiring process, during trainings, and in social work education settings to prepare child welfare students for the realities of child welfare work.
