Cultural Competence in Family-Centered Practice
Understanding families' cultural background and beliefs is essential to providing family-centered services. Practitioners who engage with families in a culturally competent way can identify families' strengths and needs in the context of culture and incorporate appropriate services and strategies into their case plans. The following resources address cultural competence in family-centered practice and include State and local examples.
Family and Youth Perspectives
National Center for Cultural Competence
Contains information in English and Spanish on providing culturally competent services to children and adolescents with special health care needs and their families.
National Resource Center for Tribes
Engages Tribes to increase their access to and use of the Training and Technical Assistance (T&TA) Network, provides T&TA, facilitates peer-to-peer consultation among Tribes on child welfare issues, and increases cultural competence and sensitivity to Tribal voices in the T&TA Network and in State child welfare systems.
National Indian Child Welfare Association (NICWA)
Provides support to Tribes, individuals, and private organizations that work to promote Indian child welfare practice. NICWA also provides information on child abuse and neglect through training, research, public policy, and grassroots community development.

Western and Pacific Child Welfare Implementation Center
Provides information, tools, and resources about a 4-year project to promote the use of a family-centered, State-Tribal collaborative approach to allow Tribal partners to develop and implement changes in child welfare practice for Native American children, youth, and families. The project focuses on key changes in initial safety assessments and placement decisions.

Expanding the Family Circle
