For immigrant and refugee families, moving from their country of origin to the United States can bring opportunities to build a new life. But parenting while adapting to a new culture, language, and social system can be particularly stressful. This factsheet discusses topics and challenges immigrant and refugee families may encounter that could affect their child or family’s well-being. It describes some of the challenges of raising children in a new country, how the immigrant or refugee experience might affect family dynamics and well-being, and how a family’s strengths (called “protective factors”) can help during difficult times.
