Case Planning for Families Involved With the Child Welfare System

Child Welfare Information Gateway, 2008. Federal law requires the development of a written case plan for any child receiving foster care maintenance payments under title IV-E (42 U.S.C. 671(16)). A review of States’ statutes and administrative codes shows that States use a variety of approaches to address the issue of case planning. This publication offers general information about when case plans are required, who may participate in the process, and the contents of a case plan.

Summaries of individual State laws that address these topics can be found through Information Gateway’s State Statutes Search.
