Understanding the Effects of Maltreatment on Early Brain Development

This bulletin documents some current research on early brain development and the ways in which abuse and neglect impact early childhood brain development and functioning. Much of this research provides biological explanations for what practitioners have been describing in psychological, emotional, and behavioral terms. Results of the research indicate scientific “evidence” of altered brain functioning as a result of early abuse and neglect, a finding which has many implications for the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect.
