Intercountry Adoption : Where Do I Start?
Introduction The number of Americans adopting children from other countries is growing. According to the U.S. Department of State, 22,728 children received visas in 2005 to come to the United States for adoption. In 1990, only about 7,000 children received these visas. This factsheet provides an overview of the steps involved in any intercountry adoption. Your process will vary depending on your State, your agency, and the country from which you adopt. In every case you must meet the basic requirements of U.S. immigration law.
