Tanisha, a 27-year-old mother of a baby boy, became very frustrated with the child welfare system when she was unable to complete the tasks required to reunite with her child.
A concerned case manager set out to help Tanisha and her son reconnect with their biological family in New York State by working with a family finding coach to contact family members and schedule a family meeting.
Tanisha was very nervous about seeing her family for the first time since she was 12 years old, but from the moment she arrived, she felt at home again. In one afternoon with her birth father, sisters, aunts, and uncles, Tanisha realized she can become the mother she aspires to be-with the help and support of her family.
Her family made heartfelt commitments to her. They told her they would open their homes to her and her child and "help her get back on her feet." Tanisha's tears flowed as the family whose love she had longed for since she was a child expressed that love and support to her. "The thought of family helping you is good, but when your family actually helps you, it is even better," she said.
How important are family connections and relationships? Tanisha knows: "Unconditional love is the key thing to a family. Mothers and their kids are bonded for life; it is a sacred bond no one can take away!"
