Family engagement is a strengths-based approach to collaborating with families in making decisions, setting goals, and achieving desired outcomes. Family engagement activities focus not only on the immediate family but also on the active involvement of both parents, extended family, resource family, and the family's support systems. Find resources on building connections with families involved in the child welfare system through meaningful family engagement. Resources include State and local examples.
Provides information about 24 Children's Bureau demonstration grant projects that aim to help children who are in or are at-risk of entering foster care to reconnect with family members. Projects were funded to initiate or expand programs in one, or a combination of, the following program areas: Kinship navigator programs, efforts to locate biological family members and reestablish relationships, family group decision-making meetings, and residential family treatment.

Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago (2009)
Examines the extent to which fathers were interviewed as a part of the Illinois Integrated Assessment (IA) process, which was designed to provide better information about child and family strengths, support systems, and service needs. Findings from the study are discussed with respect to implications for ongoing efforts by the child welfare system to engage fathers and effectively deliver or arrange services that address fathers' needs and improve child and family well-being.
Children's Friend
Works with birth parents to give them tools to help them maintain sobriety and preserve their families, building on family strengths and community-based resources. Project Connect caseworkers build relationships with the parents and help them to work towards reunification and ensure safety after reunification.
