CHANGING TOOLS OF THE TRADE: EFFECTIVE USE OF TECHNOLOGY TO FORGE NEW CONNECTIONS
This session will present an effective strategy that enables "non-techie," busy professionals to harness technology to support their work. Through an online demonstration, participants will learn ways to use the computer efficiently to identify resources and services, locate targeted information, and network in the field. By the end of the session, participants will understand how to utilize this strategy to develop a customized framework for searching across the Internet and within specialized online databases, identifying electronic periodicals for child welfare professionals, and participating on topical listserves. Presenters will share tips and tools and "lessons learned" that will increase participants' effectiveness online.
To illustrate each element of the strategy, presenters will utilize the vast resources of the Internet, including the specialized online resources of Child Welfare Information Gateway. The session will be divided into the following sections, with topical resources used to illustrate each technical approach:
- Search engines
- Web sites
- Electronic journals
- Listserves/discussion groups
- Searchable databases
Resources highlighted will include sources of information on new research, cutting edge programs, and promising practices across the span of child welfare topics.
