PARTNERS FOR SAFETY: AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH FOR MEETING THE NEEDS OF CHILDREN EXPOSED TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
This session will present a unique partnership between academically based researchers, domestic violence service providers, state agencies, and the local community to address the needs of children exposed to domestic violence. The collaboration ensures that children exposed to domestic violence are identified and have access to available community services and resources.
The Partners for Safety Project is an interagency collaboration that starts when law enforcement is called into the home, or a member of the community becomes aware of a child that is exposed to domestic violence. The response team reviews the child's case history. An action plan based on available community resources is developed with the child and family. Interagency coordination and collaboration ensures that the needs of the child and family are met.
The presentation will highlight the link between domestic violence and child abuse and neglect, discuss the role of multidisciplinary teams, and describe efforts to build community involvement for sustainability. Ownership in the project is fostered through regular meetings and the partner's participation in data collection and protocol development. Coaching and mentoring ensures a uniform understanding of the needs of the grant.
