CHANGE BASED CPS INTERVENTION

Change Based CPS Intervention is an ongoing CPS practice model that could transform ongoing CPS!

Introduced to the field at a time when ongoing CPS remains poorly defined and amorphous, the Change Based CPS Intervention model (CBCI) combines proven approaches designed to support change among individuals and families forming an effective and reasonable way to do ongoing CPS intervention. The purposes of CBCI are to: 1) return power to clients; 2) support client self determination; 3) interpret consequences; 4) facilitate the change process; and 5) establish an intervention framework that supports necessary CPS responsibilities such as safety and permanency planning. Change efforts within CBCI are focused on conditions (e.g., risk factors, threats of harm, problems) existing within a family that have brought the family to the attention of CPS and require ongoing CPS intervention.

CBCI is a behavioral-cognitive strategy that can be applied by an ongoing CPS caseworker or a designated service provider. CBCI is organized around a number of theories, concepts, and practice approaches, including:

  • The Trans-Theoretical Model of Change (Prochaska, DiClemente & Norcross, 1992)
  • Motivational Interviewing (Miller & Rollnick, 1991)
  • Solution-Focused Approach (Berg, 1994)
  • First and Second Order Change (Watzlawick et al, 1974)
  • The Competence Approach (Waters and Lawrence, 1993)
  • The Involuntary Client (Rooney, 1992)
  • Family Centered Practice
  • SUCCESS: Characteristics of Successful CPS Cases (Holder, 1996)

This workshop will review CBCI's theoretical base and demonstrate its congruence and applicability with critical CPS intervention demands and issues. Participants will be walked through the CBCI intervention process and will consider four role definitions that establish expectations for practitioners. Practical, straightforward techniques and approaches will be identified, with emphasis on their application at various stages of change. The model will be considered in the light of ASFA and other CPS requirements, and its practice-oriented documentation approach will be featured.
