It Takes a Team to Protect a Child: Child Protection Team Investigation Strategies
Increasing numbers of communities across the country are forming children's advocacy centers (CACs) to facilitate the involvement of interdisciplinary teams in responding to the needs of physically and sexually abused or neglected children. Drawing on his own experience as a police detective and a founding member of the Collin County Children's Advocacy Center, Johnson identifies common obstacles to utilizing multidisciplinary teams and educates participants on techniques to attain more functional team intervention. The session is skills-oriented; participants will learn investigative techniques specifically designed for multidisciplinary team members. Coordination, intervention, and the importance of collaboration will be stressed. Johnson will also share his "Top 10 Most Common Mistakes Made by CACs" and lead a humorous discussion of "Notorious 'C' Words: Collaboration, Change, and Confidentiality."
Johnson is a detective in the Plano Police Department's Family Violence Unit. For his efforts on behalf of the Collin County Children's Advocacy Center, he was named the Center's "Child Advocate of the Year" in 1996. Johnson was appointed to the National Board of Directors of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (ASPAC) in 1998 and currently serves as President of the APSAC Texas State Chapter. In addition to serving on numerous other national, boards and task forces, Johnson has been instrumental in helping to shape Texas laws relating to child abuse, including the now-instated "Ashley Laws."
