No More "Children at Risk" "Children of Promise"
A participant in Emmy Werner's groundbreaking "Kauai Longitudinal Study on Resilience," Mervlyn Kitashima will share a very personal account of the factors that contributed to her ability to overcome obstacles and achieve success. Her purpose in speaking out is to help those who serve "children at risk" understand that they should instead be considered children of potential and promise. She discusses the four key factors she believes foster resiliency in young children and the capacity to cope with difficult life circumstances. She also discusses the role of the professionals who work with these children.
Ms. Kitashima is District Coordinator of the Hawaii Department of Education's Parent-Community Networking Centers program. She has developed curricula and training for the program and for Hawaii's school administrators, educators, and parents. Kitashima also travels and lectures widely on "Children of Promise."
