Dr. Rich Kaplan is the physician selected to conduct forensic medical assessments for Child's Voice, the first Child Advocacy Center established in South Dakota. Child's Voice provides forensic sexual and physical abuse exams and interviews of children and now offers its services to agencies and children within the eastern two-thirds of the state. Dr. Kaplan is in demand by state, federal, and private agencies as a consultant due to his expertise and work with abused and neglected children. In 2002, he joined with the South Dakota Department of Social Services in a collaborative effort to create a program that provides specialized medical assessments for abused and neglected children who are placed in foster care in the Sioux Falls area. The assessment includes extensive physicals plus nutrition, mental health, and developmental screening. Additionally, Dr. Kaplan works with the South Dakota Department of Social Services on a Shaken Baby prevention program. He serves as the Medical Director of the Sioux Valley Hospital Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect Team/Family Support Team, which is a hospital-based multidisciplinary team in Sioux Falls; as the Medical Director for Children's Home Society, which is a residential treatment facility that serves abused and neglect children; and as a member of the state CASA Board. Previously, Dr. Kaplan served as a member of child protection teams in Marshall, Minnesota, and Yankton, South Dakota.
