Giselia Granja |
Giselia ("Gigi") Granja is both a social worker and an After Hours Emergency Response Worker in the New Bedford Area Office of the Massachusetts Department of Social Services (MDSS).
Ms. Granja began her employment with the MDSS immediately after graduation from college. She is a multi-lingual social worker with language capabilities in Portuguese, Spanish, French, and Cape Verdean Creole. She is highly regarded in the New Bedford community at large, as well as by her peers and supervisors in the office, where she serves as a mentor to new social work staff.
Ms. Granja has been an investigator of child abuse and neglect reports since 1987. Her investigations are models of thoroughness and timeliness. But what is most impressive about her work as an investigator is the fact that she never misses an opportunity to help a family during this difficult time with some "old-fashioned social work" laced with a healthy dose of kindness and care.
Whether it is during the day as an investigator, or after hours as an emergency response worker, Ms. Granja gives 100 percent of herself to the children and families of New Bedford. Everyone knows that the job will be completed with skill and professionalism, and even the families under investigation know that, regardless of the outcome, they will be treated with fairness and compassion. For all these reasons and more, the Governor of Massachusetts has recognized Ms. Granja as worthy of the ACYF Commissioner's Award.
