2008 National Adoption Month Activities

The following activities will help families and professionals celebrate adoption throughout the month of November. Find ideas for every day of the month below, or download a printable version (PDF - 163 KB). Also available in Spanish.

November 1, Saturday
Invite foster and adoptive families to a National Adoption Month kick-off celebration, and invite local media.

November 2, Sunday
Collaborate with other local agencies on an adoption celebration event or recruitment effort.

November 3, Monday
Visit Child Welfare Information Gateway for successful recruitment strategies.

November 4, Tuesday
Conduct an adoption informational meeting at a community library.

November 5, Wednesday
Refer prospective parents to AdoptUsKids.

November 6, Thursday
Submit an editorial on adoption and foster care to local papers.

November 7, Friday
Encourage local media to run public service announcements on adoption.

November 8, Saturday
Give faith leaders tools for issuing a “call to action” on finding families for waiting children.

November 9, Sunday
Ask local businesses to sponsor an adoption walk or run charity event.

November 10, Monday
Organize an adoption informational meeting for employees of a large local company.

November 11, Tuesday
Create or update a pamphlet of local resources for foster and adoptive families.

November 12, Wednesday
Reconnect with families who expressed an interest in adoption.

November 13, Thursday
Advertise your event and learn about others on the National Adoption Day website.

November 14, Friday
Host a meeting to educate local schools about adoption. National Adoption Month website has ideas.

November 15, Saturday
National Adoption Day! Participate in a local event celebrating adoption.

November 16, Sunday
Organize an adoption event at a place of worship or community center.

November 17, Monday
Host an agency-wide coffee break and show the public service announcements for teen adoption.

November 18, Tuesday
Have families share their adoption stories with potential foster and adoptive parents.

November 19, Wednesday
Invite an adopted adult to speak of his or her experiences with prospective foster and adoptive parents.

November 20, Thursday
Enhance your agency's recruitment plan with new strategies from AdoptUsKids and Information Gateway.

November 21, Friday
Arrange to display children’s art or poetry at a local gallery, airport, or library.

November 22, Saturday
Host a recruitment event and movie day for foster and adoptive families at a local theater.

November 23, Sunday
Ask clergy to talk about the need for adoptive parents for older children.

November 24, Monday
Remind waiting families to visit: www.adoptuskids.org.

November 25, Tuesday
Start a new adoptive parent support group.

November 26, Wednesday
Work with local media to develop a waiting child program or PSA campaign.

November 27, Thursday
Thanksgiving! Encourage foster and adoptive families to celebrate old and new traditions.

November 28, Friday
Create a handout on children in your agency awaiting adoptive or foster families.

November 29, Saturday
Throw a party for families that have adopted through your agency and their friends.

November 30, Sunday
Strategize to develop ways to celebrate and promote adoption throughout the year.
